Digital Manufacturing Report Managing Editor, Chelsea Long published an article on CFD Data Management as it relates to HPC adoption by small and medium sized manufacturers (SMMs). Read the article
You have to get past the risk reduction argument before you can start to sell based on ROI. The small-to-medium guys aren’t seduced by CFD and it’s great mystery or promise. If they can’t cost-effectively predict the behavior of new products with low uncertainty, they’re not interested.

Prof. Sven Schmitz and his students are using OpenFOAM and FieldView to study wind turbine wake structures. I just helped them get FieldView up and running on up to 32 CORES in both Client/Server mode and in Batch mode on their HPC cluster Cocoa. The simulations totaled 15 million grid points, 416 grids with 50 scalar and 8 vector quantities – EACH TIME STEP. Running FieldView in batch mode with 16 shared memory cores on 1 compute node, it took about 6 minutes per time step to read the data, create coordinate cut planes and iso-surfaces of vorticity, then output data extracts (XDB), movies and pictures. I’ll be working with Prof. Schmitz’s students on using this custom XDB workflow to make a movie for the ‘Gallery of Fluid Motion’ for the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics.

Our own Earl Duque, Manager of Applied Research, was interviewed and profiled for art and science magazine 5enses.
These visualizations help people understand what we’re doing, they’re beautiful and compelling, and can certainly be viewed as art, there’s hardcore engineering behind them, as well.” – Earl P. N. Duque, Ph. D.
“Earl taught me how to do CFD computations in a thorough, professional manner … and to always question my results and make sure they were right, these aren’t skills I learned in a classroom… he instilled these practices in me.” – Abigail Arington

CFD for the Rest of Us – Digital Manufacturing Report explains how the latest CFD capabilities and services are helping small-medium sized manufacturers (SMMs) succeed with affordable, high-productivity CFD.
The coming of age for CFD simulation for small and medium sized manufacturers (SMMs) is finally a reality. The story shows how the HPC-enabled CFD gap is bridged between large, established CFD users, and the smaller companies who have long seen limited success with sophisticated simulation-driven design. Intelligent Light has been recognized for its ability to bring together the necessary elements to quickly make these organizations successful without major new capital projects or hiring new engineering staff from outside their industry.
